FRS Idle Issue Resolved: Throttle Position Reset and RPM Adjustments

Identifying the Problem

At approximately 100,000 miles, my FRS developed an idling issue where it would idle abnormally low, similar to when sitting at a red light.

Diagnosing the Cause

As our FRS utilizes a Toyota ECM and drive-by-wire system similar to the Tundra, I suspected a potential throttle position reset was needed.

Throttle Position Reset

I performed a throttle position reset to restore the ECM's understanding of the throttle's idle position. This simple procedure involves disconnecting the battery, waiting a few minutes, and reconnecting it.

Adjusting RPMs

Adjusting the throttle settings allowed me to increase the park and neutral RPMs to a more desirable 900. This was accomplished by making adjustments to the throttle cable.

Brake Application Impact

Applying the brakes initially brought the RPMs down to the default in-gear idle speed of 550-600 RPM. However, after resetting the throttle position and adjusting the RPMs, the brakes no longer caused a significant drop in idling speed.

Conclusion

By performing a throttle position reset and adjusting the RPM settings, I was able to resolve the low idling issue on my FRS. These simple steps can improve the overall driving experience and prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the engine.
